The opportunity

Thurrock Flexible Generation Plant is consented via a Development Consent Order (DCO) for 300MW of batteries at 2 hours duration and up to 600MW of gas fired generation.

The battery element of the project achieved financial investment decision in Q4 2023 and is under construction, with construction of a first phase of flexible generation of 270MW to commence construction in 2024.

Located at a strategic grid supply point east of London, the Thurrock Flexible Generation Plant will provide a meaningful contribution to the UK's energy transition.

Technology

Battery storage is a front line of defence for balancing the electricity network

Batteries perform two functions for the electricity network. They use electricity to charge when there is surplus energy or low demand and they also transfer energy back to the grid in times of high demand. As renewable energy generation increases, BESS are becoming an increasingly important tool to provide services to the grid and to large scale electricity users.

Technology

Flexible generation provides vital energy security to the electricity network

Flexible generation provided by reciprocating engines is designed to ramp up from a standstill to full capacity within a matter of minutes (typically less than 10 minutes) and complement the fast-acting services of batteries. With the ability to sustain delivery over long periods without the risk of running out of stored energy, Flexible generation provides vital security to the UK power system, whether that be in response to a shortage in generation or an increase in overall demand.

About us

Who is Statera?

Statera is a UK-based energy company that develops, owns and operates flexible generation, battery storage, pumped hydro and green hydrogen projects which will all provide critical grid balancing support in a future renewables-led system.

These assets will help the UK build more renewable energy, more quickly, by providing the flexible capacity needed to balance the future grid during periods of extended shortfalls and excesses in renewable generation, due to the variability of wind and solar output. In turn, this technology will lower carbon emissions and deliver best value for energy users.
