Thurrock Flexible Generation
A flexible generation project utilising gas generation and battery storage technologies, strategically positioned close to London in Thurrock, Essex.
The opportunity
Located at a strategic grid supply point east of London, Thurrock Flexible Generation will provide a meaningful contribution to the UK's energy transition.
Thurrock Flexible Generation is for a co-located site made up of 300MW of batteries at 2 hours duration and 450MW of gas fired generation.
The battery energy storage system part of the site has been commercially operating since November 2025, with the flexible generation expected to follow by autumn 2026.
Once fully operational, the combined sites will support power needs equivalent to up to 2.4 million homes, helping secure the electricity system during periods of low renewable output.

Technology
Battery storage is a front line of defence for balancing the electricity network
Batteries perform two functions for the electricity network. They use electricity to charge when there is surplus energy or low demand and they also transfer energy back to the grid in times of high demand. As renewable energy generation increases, BESS are becoming an increasingly important tool to provide services to the grid and to large scale electricity users.

Technology
Flexible generation provides vital energy security to the electricity network
Flexible generation provided by reciprocating engines is designed to ramp up from a standstill to full capacity within a matter of minutes (typically less than 10 minutes) and complement the fast-acting services of batteries. With the ability to sustain delivery over long periods without the risk of running out of stored energy, Flexible generation provides vital security to the UK power system, whether that be in response to a shortage in generation or an increase in overall demand.
